The Cistercian abbey of Salem, founded in 1137, was at its most influential under Abbot Anselm II (1746-78), the builder of Burnau. Secularised in 1803, the abbey buildings were subsequently used as the residence of the Grand Dukes of Baden. Today, Salem resembles a small village with its private college, artists and artisans, café-restaurant and even a pharmacy housed in its Lower Gate House (Untertor-Haus), an elegantly designed Baroque building.
