Nestling at the foot of a rocky pinnacle crowned by a castle and an abbey church, Quedlinburg, with its winding streets lined with half-timbered houses, is one of the places in Germany that most faithfully reflects the picture of a 17C town. Around 930, Otto I founded a convent for daughters of the nobility. Thanks to its privileges and its lands, the religious community so prospered that the town was chosen as a residence by the Saxon kings, and six Diets, or State Councils, were held there.
