The construction of this Baroque palace, the largest in Germany, lasted from 1720 to 1760. It has more than 400 rooms and 2 000 windows. The paintings on the ceiling of the grand staircase and Knights' Hall are the work of Cosmas Damian Asam. A large part of the palace is today occupied by the university.
