On the valleyed banks of the Isar, the former capital of the dukedom of Lower Bavaria has maintained its medieval town centre practically intact. Memories of the dukes of Wittelsbach from the Ingolstadt and Landshut branches, whose court outshone that of their Munich cousins through the 16C, are still vivid. Every four years, the town commemorates the princely wedding (in 1475) of the son of Duke Ludwig the Rich and Hedwige, daughter of the King of Poland.
