Gotha : The Michelin guide review
Gotha, mentioned for the first time in 775, was a highly prosperous town in the 15C and 16C thanks to its extensive trading relations. Between 1640 and 1918 it was the seat of the Duchy of Saxe-Gotha. The Almanach of Gotha, which published the genealogies of the nobility, made it famous the world over. The market place is lined with burghers' houses from various periods, and extends right up to the castle. The hotel, a fine Renaissance building, and the castle overlooking the town are all worth visiting.
