Several fine bell-towers dominate the skyline of Erfurt, which is the capital of Thuringia since 1990. They bear witness to the town's religious activity over the centuries, in particular the Reform. Indeed, Luther stayed here. The town's important position on the main trade route between the Rhine and Russia also contributed to its commercial and political importance. It was during the Congress of Erfurt in 1808, that Napoleon attempted to rally Alexander I of Russia to the French cause, as well as Goethe, greatly admired by the emperor.
