Burghausen boasts a magnificent location on a long, narrow spur wedged between the waters of the River Salzach and the Wöhrsee, a lake which follows the course of an old river. On the spur the longest fortified castle in Germany consists of walls crowned with towers and crenellations which extend for over a kilometre. The fortifications overlook the peaceful medieval town and the views extend towards the wooded foothills of the Alps, between Germany and Austria. It’s no hardship nowadays to keep watch from these walls!
