Heckmannhöfe : The Michelin guide review

This network of courtyards, a typical feature of this unique district, is home to myriad shops and restaurants. While the first rather sombre courtyard calls to mind the Oranienburger Straße Mietskasernen (“rental barracks” – large blocks of flats rented to the working classes) of the late 19C, the second, more light and spacious in feel, inspires a sense of reverie. Among the old sheds occupied by the designers, note the 1858 glazed brick stable, decorated with a horse’s head medallion.
