The Alter Jüdische Friedhof, the oldest Jewish cemetery in Berlin (1672) destroyed in 1943 on the orders of the Gestapo, once lay at the end of this road. A stele was erected in 1990 in memory of philosopher Moses Mendelssohn, replacing the tombstone that had been destroyed on three previous occasions. Nearby stood the oldest hospice of Berlin's Jewish community, which the Gestapo turned into a meeting place. The school and college of the Jewish community have been restored.
