Travel guide Berchtesgaden
Berchtesgaden
: The Michelin guide review
The Berchtesgaden region, whose power came initially from the development of a priory and the exploitation of salt mines in the area, was annexed to Bavaria in 1810. Today the area forms a National Park with numerous Alpine lakes, such as the unforgettable Königssee and its Chapel of St Bartholomä, making this a haven of peace and tranquillity, as well as a superb area for outdoor pursuits. The village of Berchtesgaden is dominated by the legendary Watzmann, the third highest peak in Germany and the highest rock face in the Alps, which faces Hitler’s “Eagle’s Nest” on the Kehlstein.
