These two villages, united in 1945, experienced an economic boom after the discovery of significant deposits of silver and tin ore at the end of the 15C. At that time lived Adam Ries (1492-1559), administrator of the mines and head of the Annaberg School of Mathematics, a genius has literally become proverbial. In the 16C, lace production replaced mining because of dwindling silver ore deposits. The discovery of uranium deposits revived the mining industry between 1945 and 1958.
