Papal Palace : The Michelin guide review

This 15 000m Palais des Papes is made up of the Old Palace and the New Palace. The former, a fortress with austere architecture, was commissioned by Benoît XII in 1334. Artist and prodigy, Clément VI, grand prince of the Church, must have found it rather stern-looking, as in 1342 he commissioned the New Palace (Jean de Louvres). The Tour de la Garde-Robe and two new buildings enclosed the main courtyard (until then open to the public). Although the exterior changed little, the interior was splendidly decorated by a team of artists under first Simone Martini then Matteo Giovanetti.

Pros

Si vous vous attendez à trouver une réplique de Saint Pierre de Rome, vous risquez d'ètre déçu. Le palais des papes est avant tout une forteresse ou le moyen age transpire par tous ses murs et tous ses remparts. Peu ou pas de marbres, de bois précieux ou de dorures. C'est le règne de la pierre calcaire, des meurtrières, de la fraicheur des vieux murs, du silence et du recueillement. Et c'est sans doute celà qui fait son charme.

Cons

Les batiments sont quasi vides de meubles. L'espect nu est un peu regretable, comme l'impresssion d'un déménagement récent. De ce fait, le palais manque un peu de chaleur.
