From the 12th to the 18th century, a cemetery was located found here (two million skeletons have been transferred to the Catacombes), followed by a fruit and vegetable market. The fountain, designed by Pierre Lescot and sculptured by Jean Goujon, a Renaissance masterpiece, was moved from Rue Saint-Denis to its current site in 1786 and now provides the backdrop for skilled displays of hip-hop.
