It is from the quai de la Mégisserie, on the other side of the Seine, that you will find the best view of the façade of the Conciergerie, with its four towers reflected in the river which in the past lapped their base. The Bonbec Tower, on the right, became the Tower of the Question, in reference to the robust style of interrogation practised there. In the centre of the neo-Gothic façade, the twin towers used to command the entrance of the royal palace and the bridge of Charles le Chauve ; the tower on the right housed the treasure of the crown, explaining its name of Tour de l'Argent. In the other, Caesar's Tower, the public prosecutor, Fouquier-Tinville, had his lodgings during the Terror. The place tour de l'Horloge or Clock Tower, received the first public clock in Paris in 1370. The dial is decorated with sculptures by Germain Pilon. With its magnificent Gothic Halls (The salle des Gens d'Armes, in particular), the interior reminds one above all of the time of the revolution where so many clients of the Tribunal Révolutionnaire spent their last moments: Queen Marie-Antoinette, Charlotte Corday, who had assassinated Marat, the poet André Chénier, General Hoche, the physicist Lavoisier, Danton, then Robespierre and, finally, the end of an epoch, the public prosecutor Fouquier-Tinville himself : 2600 men and women left here on tumbrels for the square where the guillotine was set up between January 1793 and July 1794. You can visit the prison, and the refurbished cell where Marie-Antoinette spent her last nights.
