Standing on the Place d'Armes is the 13C tour du Guet (watchtower) which, in wartime, kept a lookout for enemy action and, in peacetime, for fires. In the 19C, it was used as a lighthouse. The inhabitants of Calais stood on its platform to watch the interview between the burghers and the King of England.
