Laval
: The Michelin guide review
Originating around the bridges and the fords which crossed the River Mayenne, Laval found prosperity thanks to the «toiles de Laval» (Laval cloth) at the time when linen work was flourishing. These days this has conceded its place to cotton and synthetic textiles. Perhaps it was the peaceful atmosphere here which gave birth to personalities such as Ambroise Paré, Alfred Jarry and Rousseau. But it is hard to believe the River Mayenne inspired François Gerbaut to cross the Atlantic single-handed!
