To atone for the beheading of Montmorency or for the repose of the deceased duke’s soul, no-one knows which, king Louis XIII dismantled the fort (“La Montmorencette”) which the governor of Languedoc had built in this location to watch over the coast. In its place was built this expiatory chapel, which attracts many pilgrims on 9 September.
