The people of Montpellier used to call it the Egg because of the ovoid shape of the boundaries of the old public space, around the Three Graces Fountain by sculptor Étienne Antoine. This lively centre, lined with café terraces and dominated by the 19C façade of the theatre, links old Montpellier with the city's more modern districts.
