Travel guide La Rochelle
La Rochelle
: The Michelin guide review
This is a wonderful port which has a quality of light that charmed painters, the Impressionists in particular. It is a fiercely Protestant place which, as a result, suffered a terrible siege at the hands of Richelieu in 1627. It became rich from its trade with the Americas. Today it's also a town happily known as the home of the Francofolies which attract thousands of music lovers around the 14th July. It is also one of the few towns in France to have decreed the bicycle king.
