Most of the region is in the Parc national des Pyrénées, created in 1967 to protect the local flora and fauna and to revive the ancient villages and their traditional livelihoods. Light-footed izards (local chamois), marmots and eagles reign over the rugged summits, torrents and lakes. The upper station of the Pic de la Sagette (2,031m) cablecar commands the best view over the Gave de Brousset Valley and the Fabrèges reservoir as far as the Pic du Midi d’Ossau.
