The Musee Bonnat was built in 1897 to house the artwork and collection of Bayonne artist Léon Bonnat (1833-1922) who made a fortune painting portraits of the upper classes of his day. The thematically arranged collection (13C-19C) blends different schools and periods, including famous artists such as Rubens, Ingres, Degas, Delacroix, Géricault, Hoppner, Rembrandt, Tiepolo, Murillo, Goya and El Greco. The museum also has a collection of ancient archaeology, ceramics and gold, as well as original drawings by great masters from France and elsewhere.
