Sainte-Dévote church has stood on the site of an ancient chapel dedicated to the patron saint of Monaco since 1870. Legend has it that she ended up here when her boat ran aground on the Monaco coast in 312. It is believed she had a very frail boat and was guided by a dove. This is the explanation for the Monacan tradition of burning a boat on 26 January, the night before this Saint's day. In the Church, a chest containing reliquaries of the saint is placed on a beautiful 18C marble altar.
