Martial and his two companions (they rejoiced in the names of Alpinien and Austriclinien) were buried here in two large sarcophaguses. Martial was exhumed and placed in the golden reliquary. The bird mosaic dates from this era. After you have crossed the room containing an enormous granite sarcophagus (said to be Tève-le-Duc), you will reach the subfoundations of the churches of Saint-Pierre and Saint-Benoît which were established on the site of a paleo-christian cemetery.
