The collections and the palace itself (a museum since 1799) necessitate a visit. Among treasures from the Middle Ages to today are the Master of Flémalle’s The Nativity, fine tombs of Philippe the Bold and John the Fearless, and two great altarpieces (carved by Jacques de Baerze, gilded by Melchior Broederlam). The Bellegarde Gallery has good 17C-18C Italian and Flemish art. Modern and Contemporary collections (animal sculptures by François Pompon, Barbizon School works) and amazing African masks.
