This is one of the largest squares in France (310 by 210 m) which is dominated by the silhouette of the Fourvières basilica. In the centre the «bronze horse» is the Lyon nickname for this equestrian statue of Louis XIV. It is decorated with bronzes by the Coustou brothers representing the Rhone and the Saone. In front of the Post Office building stands the isolated tower of the old Charity Hospital. BNP has now moved into the rooms where the Lumière brothers gave their first picture shows.
