At the foot of the Vosges mountains and the gateway to Lorraine, Saverne has benefited from its strategic position since the earliest times. A major town in Antiquity, it was later a rich episcopal see in the control of prince-bishops of the Fürstenberg and Rohan dynasties. Rebuilt in the 18C by Cardinal Louis de Rohan, the château has a fine north façade. Among the village houses, note the half-timbered maison Katz built for Henri Katz, a rich church official, and maison Mitterspach (1569).
