Baccarat owes its global renown to the fact that its name is synonymous with a luxury material of great purity. In 1764 Louis XV authorised the creation of the St Anne glassworks. By 1817 it was a specialist crystal-works and its pieces took pride of place on the most prestigious tables of the 19C. The only manufacturer capable of creating pieces of such size, the crystal-works presented Tsar Nicholas II with a 3.85m high candelabra and manufactured crystal furniture that is now highly sought after.
