Tourists and artists alike have been attracted by the atmosphere, walks and old façades of this town that lies on the edge of the Antwerp Kempen and Brabant regions. Lier is indeed true to its nickname of Plezierke "Small Pleasure". Its 16C ramparts are lined by a canal and have been turned into walks. Lier's famous figures include the wrought ironsmith Van Boeckel, the portrait painter, Opsomer, the writer Timmermans and clock and watchmaker, Zimmer.
