Situated at the junction of ancient trade routes, the small Celtic settlement of Vilabis later became Roman Ovilana. Thus, the local museum offers a rich collection of ancient artefacts, whose main exhibits are the magnificent Wels Venus and Spirit. Though no Roman remains are left in the old town, the quality and variety of the Stadtplatz district's old buildings make it one of the most characteristic urban areas in Upper-Austria.
