The German Knights had a particularly eventful history. The order of soldier monks, founded in the Crusades, later to conquer the pagan Baltic and Slav lands, helped Austria to fight the Turks before devoting itself to exclusively charitable works. The Schatzkammer or Treasury has some unusual and valuable exhibits, such as the chain of the Order. The nearby Church of St Elizabeth has a fine Flemish altar piece.
