Freyung is a large triangular square, in the centre of an old aristocratic district with numerous Baroque palaces. «Frei» which means «free», recalls the time when it was a place of asylum for fugitives taken in by the Scottish Abbey with the exception of murderers. In the centre is the Austria-Brunnen, a fountain surrounded by the Empire's 4 great rivers. Goethe's granddaughter, Alma von Goethe, is said to have been the model for the figure representing Austria.
