Built by one of the great masters of Vienna historicism, Heinrich von Ferstel, in 1860, the palace still bears his name. The neo-Romanesque and Renaissance style palace housed the National Bank and the Stock Exchange until recently saved from ruin by restoration work. Inside the palace is the Freyung Passage, lined with elegant shops, which gives on to an entrance to the Café Central. The dominant feature of the attractive courtyard is the Fountain of the Danube Sprites.
