The Schottenkirche, or church of Our Lady of the Scots, adjoining the Schottenschift, the Abbey of the Scots, dates back to 1177 but few traces of this period remain. The present building is the result of 15C alterations and Baroque refurbishments in the 17C. Inside is the venerable statue of the Virgin Mary (about 1250), still a very popular object of worship. The church was the setting on 15 June 1809 for Haydn's funeral memorial service.
