Directly inspired by the Gesù in Rome, the Jesuit church was built from 1614 to 1655 in the early Baroque style. Its sumptuous decor reflects the power of the Jesuits in the 17C who played a part in eliminating all Protestant influence from Austria. The master of trompe-l'oeil, Andrea Pozzo, who also painted the Apotheosis of Sant'Ignazio in Rome, worked on the decor of the cupola and the pulpit encrusted with mother-of-pearl.
