In 1226, Duke Leopold VI summoned the Dominicans to Vienna where they consecrated their first church. Burned and devastated by the Turks, it was rebuilt in the 17C. The frescoes in the nave are by Matthias Rauchmiller. There are several altars displaying delightful works of art from the 17 and 19C. Much of the decorative appeal of the church lies in its stucco work. In 1927, the church acquired the status of minor basilica, hence its other name of Santa Maria Rotonda.
