Ferdinand II (1529-1595), Governor of Tyrol, converted Ambras Castle into a fastuous Renaissance palace, gathering around him and his wife Philippine Welser, a bright and Humanist court. For example, the lower castle houses his Cabinet of Curiosities, to which arms rooms were added. The upper castle presents the residential quarters, a fine portrait gallery and paintings from the Middle Ages. Next door, the sumptuous Spanish Hall is still used as a concert hall.
